My Hope

When it comes to recovery tactics and how to keep sober, there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to approach. I have attempted many strategies to help fuel my sobriety and have created a plan that works for me. This is THE most important idea for any person considering recovery. Many methods have proven useless to addicts, therefore a formulated wellness plan is significant on an individual basis. One topic people agree on but may not consider is the addition of a “recovery pet” into their lives.

I have always been an avid pet lover considering their loyalty and affection, but through my addiction, I believe it was partly fueled by the fact that animals can not relay the message of my addiction to others. They can not tell your significant other when you started to drink or how much you have consumed during the day. No matter the stress level and hostility in the house, I have always had my pets by my side to seemingly support my habit and never frown on me.

When I began my recovery journey I was petless. Through all broken relationships and homelessness, I found myself alone and unable to care for any pet considering I was unable to care for myself.

Through my therapy group, I was given the idea of a “recovery pet” which I had never considered. Being I love animals, my wife, children, and I went on an exciting journey through all adoption agencies…
